Why Are Chiapas Beaches a Secret?
"Puerto Arista has remained the most visited beach in Chiapas and one of its most popular tourist destinations, all despite the relative lack of sophisticated tourism infrastructure. That is exactly what makes it special."
While Cancún, Playa del Carmen, Oaxaca and Los Cabos capture most of Mexico's tourism attention, the beaches of Chiapas remain quiet, authentic, and completely accessible. No luxury resorts, no international chains, no crowds. There is dark volcanic sand, seafood at local market prices, and the real experience of the Mexican Pacific.
Puerto Arista: The Beach of Chiapans
Puerto Arista is the most visited beach in Chiapas, and for good reason. A beach 70 kilometers long with dark volcanic sand typical of the Pacific, without mass tourism, without mass development.
Why is Puerto Arista special?
- Authenticity: The atmosphere is completely local. Visitors are mainly Chiapans who come to spend the weekend with their families.
- Fresh Seafood: The comeros (small beach restaurants) serve seafood directly from the ocean that morning. Octopus grilled, garlic shrimp, seafood soup, ceviches. At local market prices, not tourist prices.
- Budget Cabins: Very accessible accommodation. Simple but clean cabins built on the beach, many with direct ocean views.
- 70 km of Beach: It is not "full" of people. You can walk kilometers and find practically empty beaches.
How to get there: 95 kilometers from Tuxtla Gutiérrez (approximately 1.5 hours by car). Alternative: Tonalá (closer) and then taxi or combi to Puerto Arista.
What to do: Eat seafood, walk the beach, watch the sunset, rest. There are no "tourist activities" — the point is to disconnect.
El Madresal: The Paradise Hidden Among Mangroves
El Madresal is completely different from Puerto Arista. It is a private ecological reserve that represents one of the most unique places in Mexico that almost nobody knows.
What is El Madresal?
A system of protected coastal lagoons surrounded by dense mangroves. Accessible only by boat navigating through natural mangrove tunnels. Inside the reserve is an interior warm lagoon (natural, not artificial), perfect for swimming. Traditional palapas over the water where breakfast is served.
The Experience:
- Boat Access Through Mangroves: The journey itself is an adventure. You navigate through natural mangrove formations that form tunnels. You see birds, crocodiles (at safe distance), abundant wildlife.
- Warm Interior Lagoon: Warm water year-round (around 28-30°C). Perfect for swimming without cold.
- Palapa Breakfast: Breakfast is served in a palapa built on stilts over the water. Coffee, fresh fruit, bread, eggs. While you eat, pelicans fly meters from you.
- Unique Atmosphere: It is one of the few places in Mexico where you really feel like you are in a "paradise".
Important: El Madresal requires advance reservation and your own car (or organized tour). Not accessible by public transport. Prices are slightly higher than Puerto Arista, but the experience is incomparable.
Sea Turtles: July to October
Nesting Season (July - October): Chiapas beaches are nesting sites for two sea turtle species:
- Leatherback Turtle: The largest in the world, can weigh up to 900 kg. Comes to nest between July and September.
- Olive Ridley Turtle: Smaller but much more numerous. Arrives between August and October.
Unique Experience — Visit the Nighttime Spawning: Several conservation camps in Puerto Arista and surrounding areas allow you to visit spawning at night. It is one of the most incredible experiences of Mexican nature.
How It Works: The camps identify beaches where turtles have nested. During the night (around 8 PM to 4 AM) the hatchlings hatch and run toward the ocean. Guides take you with red light (which does not scare the turtles) to see thousands of tiny hatchlings moving toward the sea. It is thrilling and educational.
Recommendation: If you visit between July and October, you CANNOT miss this experience. Book in advance. The camps are simple but the experience is completely worth it.
Practical Tips: How to Enjoy the Beaches Without Disappointment
Transport and Logistics:
- Own car is RECOMMENDED for El Madresal. Without a car, only Puerto Arista is accessible by colectivo.
- From Tuxtla to Puerto Arista: 95 km, 1.5 hours. Closer alternative: Tonalá.
- From San Cristóbal: it is farther (3 hours to Tuxtla, plus 1.5 to beach). Less recommended.
What to Bring:
- Water: Bring enough drinking water. The beaches are dry, little water available in El Madresal.
- Biodegradable Sunscreen: Protects your skin AND reefs. Conventional sunscreen kills coral.
- Cash: Beaches operate mostly on cash. ATMs are limited.
- Swimsuit: Especially for El Madresal and Puerto Arista.
- Mosquito Repellent: In the afternoon/evening, mosquitoes can be abundant.
Realistic Expectations:
- Don't expect Cancún infrastructure. There isn't any and that's the point. Chiapas beaches are real beaches, not polished tourist destinations.
- The seafood in Puerto Arista is WORTH the trip alone. It is what people remember after years.
- El Madresal is a hidden luxury. Moderate prices, extraordinary experience.
